Greenlaning.....

Postby samsparro » 24 Apr 2012, 16:28

Took the WR out for its first spin on some green lanes in Derbyshire today, brilliant and really enjoyed it.

However, I was quite shocked with the behaviour of some of the walkers. We were all road legal(ish) and stayed on the correct 'roads', slowed down for walkers and stopped with engines off for horses.

So why do some walkers give you loads of grief, shouting and gesticulating and even taking photos of us!

I stopped and spoke to some who said we were doing "lawful vandalism' and destroying the neighbourhood. I did try and reason with them, but it was liking banging my head against a brick wall.....

If we had been somewhere we shouldn't I could understand it!

I swear one of the old dears called me a 'w****r' how did she know it was me with my helmet on!!!!!

Anyone else suffered this abuse in derbyshire?

The trouble with walkers Sam, is that most of them, not all of them, but most of them don`t know the By-Laws.
I mountain biked around the dark peak for about 10 years and suffered the same abuse. Mountain bikes are not allowed on footpaths...they are, however allowed on bridleways. One altercation, I asked the old dear if he had a map, in between dodging his walking stick aimed at my head, he didn`t have one. I asked him if he knew that the route we were on was a bridleway?...he said it didnt matter. I produced my map, laid it out and asked him to show us where we were...he couldn`t.
He said we were causing trail erosion....b*ll*cks. Trail erosion is where trails get wider and wider with people avoiding large puddles. Bikers revel in going THROUGH puddles not around them.....walkers go around puddles causing trail erosion.

Its like banging your head against a brick wall with them.....lost count of how many times Ive been hit with walking sticks mountain biking.

Brilliant bit of kit, loads of power!

Sorry for the blustered phone call earlier, the caliper had foxed even my pal who's an AA patrol man and I couldn't remember what you had told me, thanks for the info!!!!!

Superdave, your spot on. The couple I tried talking to looked at me like I was a piece of dog sh*te on their shoe..... What gets me is that I've been told the roads we can use account for about 2% off the routes in the peak district, so surely if you don't like bikes then stop off the bridleways where bikes and cars can use them!

I don't mind if you are somewhere your shouldn't be, and if that's the case then you reap what you sow!

I can't believe you get the same abuse on a mountain bike!

Don't they realise that when we go into Derbyshire, we usually tend to find a little cafe for some food, which means we bring money into the area......

Sam, be careful, motorbikes are only allowed on BOAT`s (byways open to all traffic)....formally RUPP`s if you have an old map.
You are not allowed on footpaths or bridleways......................mountain bikes are not allowed on footpaths.

What I find really amusing is that a lot of these walkers are using EXACTLY the same arguments the gamekeepers etc used to stop THEM from walking on the moors. I am curious though when they are walking in the middle of the f*kin road with their dogs playing dodgems with the traffic do we have the right to tell them to get of the effing road and walk on the sodding pavement, like they are supposed to!

It's a good bit of trail that!

I assume this argument has been going on for years, cause off roading has been around probably for longer than I have been alive, so why now all this?

At least the council has seen a little sense. If you ban off roaders/trail bikes full stop from Derbyshire it will just send the problem elsewhere, and it deffo won't stop the ones who ride illegally anyway!

Besides, catching illegal off roaders is WAY harder than it looks....... :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

We used to get this problem all the time, we just learned never to stop for anyone other than a police officer, it just wasnt worth the hastle and grief. The biggest cause of damage to any lane/trail by far is water!
all types of bikes and scooters bought and sold! PM me with details!

One of the reasons why I sold the KTM. I was sick of feeling like a lepor when I went out.
I actually live on the edge of Blackamoor and love to either walk this edge or occasionally get the bike out and trailride across it. When out walking I'm nodded at and everyone and their aunty wants to chat to you, when out on the KTM I'm looked at as a yob and those same walkers who would chat to me would stand in the middle of the path and then complain when I tried to manovour around them ..... t*ss*r!!
I know not where I'm going, for the road it will decide,
It's not the destination..........It's the glory of the ride!
